My 2021 Sketch Book

Updated: Jan 7, 2021

The start of a new year propels one toward new ideas and destinations. The image of a road trip comes to mind: The car packed up, gas tank full, and the open highway beckoning...

Of course, we continue to live in a pandemic, so the open road will have to be created in the studio. From paint. A trip to Bora Bora might have been nice, but there are infinite possibilities in art, and I'm pretty excited about the creative roads that lie ahead.

The creative journey always begins in my sketch book. On January 1st I was thinking, "2021, The Year of the...?" And then this guy emerged. The Year of the Unknown Beast? The Wild Cow? (The sketch book provides intrigue, not easy answers.)

A sketch book is an artist's best friend. When you are together you can be yourself. There are no secrets, no shame. I am free to try new techniques, new materials. Layers build up. Others are scraped back. No need to hold back, and most importantly, there is no right or wrong.

If you are curious, here are a few pages from the first days of my 2021 sketch book. I challenge you to start one too.

Happy 2021, friends. May it be a year filled with good health, love, and whatever lights your inner fire.
